Roman ruins abound in Extremadura, like this
bridge crossing the Guadiana River. The Palacio
Quemado estate nearby is scattered with Roman
ruins.
Ribera del Guadiana is a young DO in Extremadura
(western central Spain). It was granted its
official status in 1999, taking its name from
the river that runs through the vineyards from
east to west.
It’s a region of gently rolling hills with a
warm climate and lots of sunlight. The
continental climate is influenced by ocean
breezes.
This area remains relatively unknown for its
wines, the reddish clay soils and warm climate
of the place make it perfect for the Palacio
Quemado vineyards. 250 acres of Tempranillo,
Syrah, Garnacha, Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit
Verdot were planted in an enterprising venture
by the Alvear Family, one of Spain’s most famous
sherry producers.
Palacio Quemado’s winery, a brand new building,
is located within the beautiful Finca Palacio
Quemado, an ancient family property that covers
over 9500 acres which, in addition to vineyards,
are dedicated to the cultivation of olives
trees, grain, and livestock.
Each vineyard is divided into plots of about 10
acres each. Each plot has its own individually
controlled irrigation system and management
program depending on the specific needs of each
varietal and the microclimate. This allows
strict control of yields and high quality.
Harvest starts at the end of August, a month
earlier than most of the rest of Spain, because
the vegetative cycle in the region is further
advanced.
Palacio Quemado Crianza is made from Tempranillo
grapes from old vineyards. Fermentation takes
place in small volume, temperature controlled
stainless steel tanks where the grapes undergo a
long maceration. The wine was aged for six
months in new American oak barrels.
Give this wine time to open. Serve with steak, a
hearty vegetable stew or with hard cheeses.
