Wine Spectator 04/2010 91 2004 Black cherry, licorice, smoke, tobacco and tar notes mingle in this firm, lively red. Maturing now, but shows balance and length. Still fresh, this brings you back for another sip. Drink now through 2016.—T.M.
Wine & Spirits 12/2009 90    Best Buy 2004 If you like gamey reds, here's a wine that is peppery and tart, its cherry flavors balanced by green tomato-skin acidity. A small amount of mazuelo (5 percent) seems to kick up that acidity and direct the wine toward roasted wild mushrooms.
The Wine Advocate 2/2009 92 2002 Deep garnet color. Earthy, gamey nose with some warm plum and dark cherry fruit plus a touch of leather and girolles. The palate gives lots of layers of fruit and savory flavors – very peppery. Well structured with medium to high acidity and a medium+ level of finely grained tannins. Long finish. A good example of an old school wine that works beautifully. Drink now to 2016. Tasted February 2009.
