Castelo de Medina Sauvignon 2007

89 Points

Limpid pale straw color. A bold and sassy bouquet with notes of fennel and mint over a background of tropical fruit and green apple.  Fresh and full of citrus and gooseberry fruit flavors on the palate. A good dose of acidity gives the wine a firm core and complements the rich, ripe tropical flavors.

The winery is situated in Villaverde de Medina, in the Rueda district at the heart of Castilla y León. They own 190 hectares of vineyards   which are predominately white (160 ha of Verdejo, Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay and Viura).

The vineyards are located in the Duero River basin on gently sloping highland plains. Atlantic winds are the main weather. The soil is rocky, rich in calcium and magnesium with good aeration and drainage.

The winery is built in traditional Castilian architectural style.

Bodegas Castelo de Medina produces a range of wines but their pride and joy are their whites, the classic wines of the Rueda region—the traditional Verdejo and the more modern Sauvignon Blanc introduced from France.

The winery boasts of the lastest in winemaking technology with a battery of stainless steel tanks and modern temperature control equipment which is essential in preserving the natural character of the grapes and maintaining freshness in the wines.

The Sauvignon Blanc is vinified in stainless steel at low temperatures. After fermentation, the wine is carefully racked and aged in stainless steel before bottling.
